The Whirlpool Galaxy
The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) lies in the constellation Canes Venatici the Hunting Dogs. This deep-sky treasure, also known as NGC 5194, Lord Rosse’s Nebula, and the Question Mark, shines at magnitude 8.4 and measures 8.2’ by 6.9’. The Whirlpool’s smaller companion is NGC 5195, and the bright star at the lower right is magnitude 7.1 SAO 44642. (5.2-inch Thomas M.
